Tiaki's Life
Te Ora o Tiaki

Tiaki tui lives in a forest.  The forest hasn't always been like it is today.

  • To understand about Tiaki's life, play the game. The game requires the shockwave plugin (570Kb).
  • In this game you will become Tiaki.  You can choose what sort of forest you would like to live in.
  1. Natural. This is what the forest was like before people came with their animals. Tiaki tui had very few predators and competitors. Life was much easier.
  2. Modified. When people came to New Zealand they introduced predators like cats and stoats and competitors like possums and wasps. Tiaki had to work harder to find food and be more alert for predators.
  3. Managed. Once people realised that competitors and predators were pushing native birds to the brink of extinction they developed ways to kill them without harming the native birds. Bait stations contain poisoned food and the tunnels conceal traps to kill predators.

Your goal:
Your goal is to eat enough to mate, produce eggs and fledge the chicks. But being a tui isn't always easy.  You need to eat food all the time to keep your energy up or you will die.

Compete with other users:
You can also compete with other game users and score the highest possible points. You gain points by finding and eating food and by answering questions that pop up during the game - time stops for you to answer them! To derive maximum enjoyment, the game should be attempted after working through the rest of the TuiTime web site: users will do better with a good understanding of the ecology of Tiaki tui! Users may also like to preview the questions that pop up during the game - giving you vital points.
